Inkjet printing has become a runaway technology offering high-quality, low cost color printing on demand. IBM launched the first inkjet printer in 1975; HP and Canon introduces a new generation of thermal inkjet printer in the mid-1980. Since then, inkjet printers have steadily increasing performance and decreasing price trend.
By 1997 the Western European install base for inkjet printers has reached 30 million units. This is forecast to double within two or three years. The resulting inkjet printer cartridge market value in 1997 was over $4 billion and this expected to reach more than $7 billion by the start of the 2nd Millennium.
